At National Celebration we were lucky to have a very special guest share his story with us. Morgan Marshall is a Wish Kid who had his wish to travel to Africa granted by Make-A-Wish®. Here’s Morgan’s story…
There are times when the brave children who receive wishes decide they want to share the joy with others; 13-year-old Morgan did exactly that.
On Christmas Eve 2007, Morgan’s family discovered that he had leukaemia. There is never a good way or time to receive this news, but to be told on Christmas Eve, when the family is anticipating a great day ahead, is doubly hard to take. For Morgan’s Dad, Scott, it was the most devastating moment of his life. “We were really not prepared. It knocked our socks off,” he said.
Now, almost four years later, Morgan’s treatment for leukaemia is complete, though his battle with the condition is far from over.
There is no doubt that Morgan’s journey has been buoyed by the support of his family, in particular his brother, Mason, from whom he is inseparable. Throughout treatment, Morgan dreamt about going on an African safari, a wish he hoped could come true if his condition improved.
Eventually that day arrived; Morgan was well enough to make the journey.
When Make-A-Wish Australia volunteers told Morgan that his wish would come true it was an especially exciting moment as, due to health concerns, the trip had been postponed once already. Then, Morgan introduced a challenge! As part of his wish, the selfless teenager wanted to visit schools and an orphanage in Africa and give sports equipment to children he saw as being in greater need than himself.
The team at Make-A-Wish loved the idea. They contacted their friends at A-League soccer team Brisbane Roar, who Morgan and Mason also happen to support. The team was touched by Morgan’s generous wish and gave him sports equipment and merchandise to donate.
Morgan and his family have since returned from their amazing African adventure with a unique and memorable experience under their belts and the great feeling that comes with giving back.
